Housing is one of the key concerns for applicants and students planning to study in Moscow. This is especially important for international students who are coming to Russia for the first time and face new rules, climate, and living conditions. It is often assumed that the university automatically provides a dormitory, but in practice, this is not always the case.

Most Moscow universities have affiliated dormitories where students can live during their studies. However, placement is not guaranteed: spaces are allocated in order of application and depend on multiple factors. If no spaces are available, students need to consider alternatives — renting an apartment or temporary housing such as a hostel.

Planning ahead is therefore very important. This is especially true for students from Turkey and other countries, as choosing housing early helps avoid stress, extra costs, and complications with registration after arrival.

University-Affiliated Dormitories Spaces are allocated according to established rules: year of study, program type, benefits, and application date are considered. It is important to understand that having a dormitory at a university does not automatically guarantee a spot. The number of places is limited, so a waiting list is formed. The earlier a student submits documents and confirms their intention to study, the higher the chances of getting a place.

Living Conditions Security is usually in place, with access control to ensure student safety. Rules also apply: maintaining quiet, registering guests, and keeping rooms tidy.

Pros:

Cons:

Rental Formats Costs and Expenses Pros:

Cons:

Hostels in Moscow are often used as temporary housing for students during the first weeks after arrival. This is convenient if the dormitory or apartment is not yet arranged.

The cost is lower than renting an apartment, but the conditions are simpler. It is important to check in advance about registration at the place of residence, as this is required for foreign citizens.

When choosing housing, consider your budget, duration and type of study, personal preferences (dormitory or privacy), transportation access, and safety of the area. Travel time to the university and proximity to the metro can significantly affect comfort in Moscow.

Students often choose districts close to universities or metro lines with convenient access to the city center. Both central districts and residential neighborhoods with developed infrastructure — shops, services, and medical centers — are in demand. Safety is a key factor when choosing where to live.

Students from Turkey and other countries are advised to start looking for housing well in advance, even before obtaining a visa. Prepare documents for renting, check registration requirements, and use trusted platforms or specialist consultations. Consider Moscow’s climate and living conditions, especially during the winter.

Each housing option has its pros and cons. Dormitories are more affordable but not guaranteed. Renting an apartment offers more freedom but requires a higher budget and independence. The lack of guaranteed dormitory space makes early planning essential.

Moscow offers a wide range of housing options for international students. Choosing the right option helps not only to study comfortably but also to adapt faster to life in a new city.

Housing is one of the key concerns for applicants and students planning to study in Moscow.
